Transportation in Bangkok: Apart from the BTS skytrain, there is also the MRT subway, which interchanges with the BTS at Asoke/Sukhumvit, Sala Daeng/Silom and Mo Chit/Chatuchak Park stations. Metered taxis are also reasonably priced, though it is helpful to have your address written in Thai as many drivers do not speak English or other languages. There is also the much endeared tuktuk which is not metered.
Gratuity: Tipping is not expected in most simple streetside food shops, but is increasingly more common in established restaurants. In cases where a 10% service charge is not added to the total, a tip of 10% is considered reasonable. Taxi fares should be rounded up to the nearest 5 Baht.
VAT: Goods purchased from established retailers in Thailand include 7% VAT. However, if you are visiting for less than 180 days per calendar year and leave Thailand by plane, you can claim a VAT refund at the airport upon departure.
